For Sabrina Salerno the early 90′s were a turning point in her career. She co-hosted the popular TV show “Ricomincio da due” with Raffaella Carra’, and the following year, she participates for the first time at the Sanremo Music Festival in a duet with Jo Squillo (Milan, 1962) a singer-songwriter who, in 1979, not yet of age, was at the sharp end of the Italian punk movement. Later she will move towards a more disco sound.
Sabrina’s parnership with Squillo marks also her first release in Italian language. The song is “Siamo donne“, a sort of pop hymn to feminism. Curiously ironic is, in my opinion, the mismatch between the duo’s performance and the song’s lyrics.
“Siamo donne”, even if had much acclaim from the audience, will end up only in the third last place but, as often happens with Sanremo’s songs, it will soon become a Top 10 in Italy and an international hit.
The artistic partnership between the two artists ended very soon, in fact, in the summer of the same year, Sabrina performed solo their song at the Festivalbar song contest.
