Marco Mengoni is probably the most talked about Italian singer of this year. Born in Ronciglione, Latium, in 1988, he was the winner of the third Italian version of The X Factorin 2009, and ended up in 3rd place at the Sanremo Music Festival 2010. This year, he also won the TRL award “Man of the Year” and the “Best European Act” at the MTV Music Awards. His second album “Re Matto” debuted straight to n.1 in the Italian EP chart and it has sold over 100,000 copies.
“In un giorno qualunque” (“On an ordinary day”) is the first single from the live version of the Re Matto album, it’s a powerful ballad where Mengoni shows all his wide vocal range. It reached n.5 in the Italian singles chart in November. The song’s refrain, as some critics noticed, does bear a resemblance to R. Kelly’s “I believe I can fly”.
His voice is characteristic of a distinguishing timbre, typically soul with pop-rock marks. In an interview, Mengoni has described his musical sound as “british-black”, and that his biggest influence were the Beatles.
