Elio e le Storie Tese is a very popular, especially among youngsters, Italian band from Milan, formed in the early 80′s. Their music is clearly inspired, in both lyrics and music, to the style of Frank Zappa. Their leader and lead vocal, Stefano Belisari, is “Elio“. Although they are considered among the best musicians in Italy, they have always leaned towards the more demential and uncliched side of pop music. A good example is their partecipation to the Sanremo Festival in 1996, with “La terra dei cachi” (“The persimmon land”) where they “sing” about Italy’s scandals and the average Italian behavior abroad, in their own style. They got the 2nd place, but rumour has it that they actually won the competition, but Sanremo‘s host himself, Pippo Baudo, altered the final votes. In the end, the band was the moral winner, and their song reached n.1 on the Italian singles chart a few weeks later.
