Mino Reitano (1944-2009) was an Italian singer-songwriter. Born in a small village named Fiumara, in Calabria, southern Italy, Reitano studied piano, trumpet and violin for eight years at the conservatory in Reggio Calabria. When he was still a kid, he formed a band with his brothers and moved to Germany, where they were offered a contract to perform in several clubs, and in some of them, along with no less than the Beatles themselves, when they started out.
Mino Reitano, well-known for his great vitality and pleasant exuberance of his performances, is still considered an icon of Italian national-popular music. The main themes of his songs are love, the south and the uprooting of migrant workers.
In 1988, he participates in the Sanremo Music Festival with a song called “Italia“, which was actually written in the beginning for Pavarotti. With this song, that expresses in a bit emphatic way Reitano’s love for his country, he reaches only the 6th final place, but the piece will soon have his following and will be destined to become an evergreen of Italian music.
In 2007 Mino Reitano was diagnosed with an intestine cancer. He faces his illness with great courage thanks also to the comfort of his strong catholic faith. He will die almost two years later, in 2009.

Al Bano – E’ la mia vita (1996)

After the end of the musical partnership with his then-wife Romina Power, Al Bano returns to his solo career in 1996. It is a very trying period for the popular Italian singer. His daughter Ylenia diappeared mysteriously in S. Francisco two years before, never to be found again, and his marriage is on the rocks (he will divorce three years later).
From an artistic point of view, Al Bano returns to more challenging melodic interpretations, where he can unleash his vocal abilities, which in the previous repertoire, they have been somewhat sacrified in harmonizing with Romina’s voice, undoubtely not as extensive and powerful as Al Bano’s.
This is shown quite well in the song that he presents that year at the Sanremo Music Festival, called “E’ la mia vita” (“It’s my life”). Its lyrics take stock of his life with veiled hints at the painful family affair in which he was involved.
The song ended up in the 7th place but had a noteworthy success with critics and fans, and it is widely regarded as one of his best releases since he went back as a solo artist.

Lucio Dalla – 4 Marzo 1943 (1971)

Lucio Dalla, one of the most popular and loved Italian singer-songwriters, died on March 1st on Montreaux, Switzerland, during a European concert tour, for a sudden heart attack. Three days later he would have turned 69.
It has been a great loss for Italian music. Dalla was widely regarded by music critics and fans alike as an eclectic top musician and a poet of great sensibility. Gifted with a versatile and tireless creativity, he enhanced the Italian melodic tradition with jazz echoes and classical inspirations. Through many of his songs’ original and thoughtful lyrics, we can find not only stories of ordinary people, but his life interests and passions as well, such as his love for the sea, cars and opera.
His funeral was held in Bologna, his home town, with a huge crowd attending the ceremony. As a painful coincidence, the day was March 4th, right the title of the song which gained him great popularity. In fact, he peformed at the Sanremo Music Festival in 1971 his 4 marzo 1943, a ballad whose lyrics were written by poetess Paola Pallottino. It earned him a 3rd final place at Sanremo competition, and his first n.1 hit in the Italian Singles chart.
Actually, the original title of the song was supposed to be “Gesu’ bambino” (“Baby Jesus”), however, due to a stiff censorship, the title was changed to Dalla’s birth date, though the song was not autobiographic but it tells the story of a young and unexperienced woman who gives birth to a baby during the Second World War.

Eros Ramazzotti – Piu’ bella cosa (1996)

The 90′s were truly the years of worldwide commercial success for Eros Ramazzotti. In 1990 he became the first Italian artist to perform in the Radio City Music Hall in New York, and he also performed in big TV shows like The Tonight Show and Good Morning America.
In 1993, he toured extensively in Europe and in 15 Latin-American countries, where he released his albums in Spanish language. A few years later, he released his first self-produced album, the 7 million seller “Dove c’è’ musica“. And, as a lovely plus, on December ’96 his future wife Michelle Hunziker gave birth to their daughter Aurora.
And right from that album, the single “Piu’ bella cosa” (“Most beautiful thing”) proved to be another big hit for the Roman singer-songwriter, The song, a dedication to his partner (who is also featured in the original videoclip), climbed to n.1 in the Italian Singles chart and reached the top 10 in several other european countries. It would also win the Italian song competition Festivalbar.

Emma Marrone – Non e’ l’inferno (2012)

Emma Marrone (often simply known as Emma) is an Italian singer who won the 2012 edition of the Sanremo Music Festival with her song Non e’ l’inferno. (“It’s not the hell“). She was born in Florence in 1984.
Emma started performing in her pre-teenage years in local festivals and clubs. Her professional music career started in 2003, when she formed the Lucky Star band. The group disbanded after the commerical failure of thir first album.
Her big break comes in 2010, when she won the 9th edition of the Italian talent-show Amici. Soon after, she released her first EP, Oltre, which was quite successful in Italy, peaking n.1 in the Italian Album Chart and being certified triple platinum. She participated in the Sanremo Music Festival 2011, with the Italian band Moda’, performing the song Arrivera’, which finished at the 2nd place.
Her latest Sanremo-winning song Non e’ l’inferno is about the troubled Italian economic and social situation, but looking at it in an optimistic key. She has stated that ” Italy is just all of us, and it is a right thing that a government gave us the right directives, otherwise we would live in anarchy, like monkeys on trees”.

Nomadi – Un giorno insieme (1973)

Nomadi is a greatly acclaimed and famous Italian pop-rock and folk band formed in 1963 by keyboardist Beppe Carletti and singer Augusto Daolio. It’s most likely the longest-lived Italian pop group on the music scene.
Their first hits go back to the second half of the 70′s, and are considered like real anthems of the Italian beat generation. Their renowned “Dio e’ morto” (“God is dead”) was soon judged blasphemous by RAI and promptly censored, but was wasily broadcasted by Vatican Radio, which instead appreciated its content.
More and more hits will come in the 70′s, and although they were not much present on the charts, they kept enjoying a seemingly never-ending success among their fans, with songs that mostly promoted a message of denunciation and clean social commitment, never too political.
But in 1992 a tragedy was behind the corner: Augusto Daolio, the band’s charismatic frontman and music icon, died of an aggressive form of lung cancer, leaving in a shock and despair their fans. Nevertheless, the group decided to continue their music activity with a new convincing line-up and a new lead singer, Daniele Sacco.
Nomadi’s second life had so started. They began touring all around the world, promoting civil and cultural solidarity through their music and social commitment.
“Un giorno insieme” (“A day together”) is their 1973 Top 10 hit and one of band’s most loved songs.
